In the introduction to the class I spoke to the group about Mark’s Gospel using the story of Bartimaeus as a guide. Bartimaeus is a central character in my own journey of faith. He is a dynamic character. Mark’s story of his journey to discipleship is rich and imaginative. It is full of metaphors that help us to understand our own lives as disciples. Through Bartimaeus, Mark shows us what it looks like to follow Jesus. He will be one of our conversation partners along the way.
My goal for this class is to lead us into conversations that help us to gain new perspectives on the gospel and our everyday lives.
This blog will become a source of my notes and reflections from the class. I will attempt to have them posted by the beginning of each week.
For those in the class who engage this site, or for those who follow our journey from a distance, I invite you to post comments and share your thoughts. This will help to inform the class and can serve as a gauge for what topics most stir people’s imaginations.
I have used the word imagination a great deal recently. It is an appropriate word for a modern day disciple. Our imaginations help us to encounter the world with rich depth, energy, and meaning. By spending time with Mark, and in conversation with one another, I pray that the Holy Spirit enlivens our imaginations as modern day disciples.
May God bless our reading and conversation.
