In December of 2016 I took the opportunity to go with my father and his mother to visit the graves of ancestors. We saw the graves of Friedrich and Katharina Dornhoeffer who crossed the Atlantic in 1847 to come to Texas and start a new life. They were my Nana’s great-grandparents. We saw the grave of her grandparents, Wilhelm and Bertha Dornhoeffer. These folks worked the same soil my father and grandfather still work today. These stops were humbling and formative for me. Remembering where we come from, and who proceeded us on the journey, has a major impact on where we go in this world.
These were All Saints moments for me. Remembering the cloud of witnesses that helped to prepare the way for me. We celebrate the festival of All Saints on November 5th, remembering those who have died in the past year, as well as those who have gone before us and received in full the promise of abundant and eternal life given through Christ. Though they are no longer here, they still help to guide and shape who we are as disciples of Jesus.
Peace be with you.
